It’s all been quiet on the boy front. The trip to the UK and coming back with my Mother in tow put paid to finding my knight on a camel for a bit. But being stuck in traffic one Friday night reminded me that Kuwait is a dangerous place to be single in. And one poor girl paid with her life.
Boys in Kuwait spend HOURS driving up and down the Gulf Road looking for attractive women in cars. I have been told by numerous cab drivers to keep my sunglasses on and not look in to other cars. This is because a glimpse of eye contact makes the horny Arab guy excited and he’ll then drive even more recklessly than usual. No one can bloody drive over here at it is but when their attention is focused on the car next to them rather than they one they are in it gets dangerous. The Friday in question we had to deal with an SUV that wanted my attention and kept trying to cut up my driver and then slow down. And that’s when my driver told me what he’s witnessed the previous week.
Two cars of locals spotted a girl driving on her own. She tried to ignore them and keep going. This excited them more and the ‘thrill of the chase’ began. To stop her, a car went each side of her and made a pincer movement to stop her. On impact the girl’s car burst in to flames. There’s no happy, heroic ending to this. The girl died before anyone could get to her. She burnt alive because a group of guys wanted her attention. Flirting in this country kills.
It’s scary that this behavior is deemed ‘normal’ among the testosterone filled, steroid pumping Kuwaiti boys. I really hope no other girl falls victim to this Friday hobby (it happens most days but Friday’s it’s even more prevalent).
So it might be a quiet time for me, but I’d rather be ignored by every male in the world than dying in a flaming car.
